Employee satisfaction in healthcare and social sciences declined from April to May following the sector’s historic increase the previous month, according to ADP’s latest Employee Motivation and Commitment Index.

The EMC Index offers a month-to-month snapshot of employee satisfaction. Values below 100 indicate diminishing engagement and connection, whereas values above 100 suggest growing commitment and motivation, according to ADP.

For the healthcare and social sciences sector, employee satisfaction dipped 12 points to 127 from April to May. The sector’s lowest ranking since April 2024 of 121 took place in January and February

Healthcare hiring is booming, but worker sentiment in the sector is not,” said Mary Hayes, PhD, director of people and performance at ADP Research. “In the bigger picture, while we saw improvement in April, our long run of weakening worker sentiment might not be over.”

Overall employee satisfaction across all industries decreased by one point in May, closing at 131, after last month’s three-point increase following seven consecutive months of decline, according to ADP.

Of the 10 sectors rated by ADP, healthcare showed the biggest decline, followed by real estate with a 10-point drop to 114, information with an eight-point decline, educational services with a seven-point loss and professional services with a four-point dip.

The following sectors saw increases in employee satisfaction in May: transportation / warehousing (12 points), manufacturing (nine points) and retail / wholesale trade (five points).

Construction held even at 100 points month over month.

ADP began tracking survey respondents by employer size in December 2022. Beginning in January, this metric is included in the EMC each month.

Large employers, defined as having 5,000 or more employees, showed the biggest improvement in May, with satisfaction rising seven points to 96. Among all medium-sized employers, with 2,500 to 4,999 employees, employee satisfaction increased by only two points to 148. Employee satisfaction among small businesses, with one to 50 workers, saw a one-point increase to 98.

For this month’s report, ADP Research collected responses from 2,500 US workers May 1 to May 7.

ADP Research publishes the EMC Index on the third Tuesday of every month. The next release will be June 16.
